What Happens After You Are Reported for Academic Dishonesty at Miami?

When an instructor suspects academic dishonesty, Miami's Academic Integrity process generally begins with a report to Academic Integrity staff.

The student receives notice of the allegation and is scheduled for a Procedural Review meeting with Academic Integrity staff.

This early stage of the case is important.

Before deciding how to respond, a student should understand:

  • Exactly what conduct is alleged;

  • What policy or course rule the student allegedly violated;

  • What evidence was submitted by the instructor;

  • Whether the evidence actually establishes academic dishonesty;

  • Whether there is additional evidence that provides context or supports the student's account;

  • What options are available for resolving or contesting the allegation; and

  • What consequences could result from each option.

Students should avoid assuming that they need to immediately admit wrongdoing simply because a professor has reported them.

Likewise, a student who did make a mistake may benefit from carefully considering how to accept responsibility, provide context, demonstrate insight, and address the appropriate sanction.

The right strategy depends on the facts of the individual case.

What If I Am Falsely Accused of Cheating at Miami University?
